Nontraditional Wedding Ideas

Hello! I’m Tyler Lyons, owner and photographer of Scratch Studios, an award-winning wedding and lifestyle photography company based in New York City. Scratch Studios is committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment and service for all clients and individuals. Choosing the right photographer who puts you at ease, provides encouragement, and makes you laugh is most important for bringing your vision to life. Today’s blog is all about ideas for nontraditional weddings.

I am a NYC and destination wedding photographer, and I specialize in romantic and first look wedding photos, LGBTQ+ wedding photos, and candid photographs.  I have always encouraged an inclusive environment, and I strive to make the photography process care-free for my couples. I have over one hundred 5-star reviews from clients, fellow vendors, parents, wedding parties and guests showing my exceptional customer service and client satisfaction with the final product. The following are some of my ideas for unique locations, celebrations, and magical details to enhance your nontraditional wedding photos!

  1. Frequently the outfits for the wedding ceremony are not particularly comfortable for the party afterwards. I love a change of outfits for the reception! Nontraditional clothing can be a big hit, including both brides wearing a dress or pantsuits, both grooms changing into custom made suits for the reception, and outfits designed by couples specifically for their celebration. Every wedding is the couple’s own unique love story, and I am here to photograph your vision with the utmost care and passion.

  2. You can create unique backgrounds for your first look wedding photos. The first look is when a couple sees each other for the first time on their wedding day. This intimate moment makes for an emotional and romantic photo opportunity. Choosing a background that reflects your style and celebration makes your photographs uniquely yours. I have used multi-colored smoke bombs in the background, creating extremely cool portraits with a rainbow theme.

  3. Another idea for reflecting your unique love story and what is most important to you as a couple is to include your dog in the wedding portraits and ceremony. You can dress your beloved pet in matching attire, put them front and center in your individual or group photos, and have memories forever of their participation in your special day.

  4. Check out Eric and Greg's wedding gallery to see performers from the TV show Pose doing a vogueing routine at a reception. The couple also had feather dancers during cocktail hour. Something fun to consider is first looks in unique locations. I photographed a super sporty couple on a basketball court for their first look. See below!

  5. Destination weddings or elopements are a big hit with LGTBQ couples wanting to scale back on a big wedding and have a more intimate, magical ceremony. Destination weddings can include stunning scenery, a nod to the local culture, a detail reflecting local customs, or can be held at an all-inclusive resort, where lodging, meals and drinks are already included!

This is your wedding day, and I want you to enjoy it and leave the rest to me! Contact me below!
